Laptop buying Guide

Well, I have use to be crazy about computers back in the year 1997 till around 2004. I remember that time my Dad bought me my good old Pentium MMX system. Computer are super expensive back then. I have been through lots of experience with computers, even help friends to buy computers all the time till i lost count of how many system I have setup for my friends.

Computers technology has evolve a lot since the days of the MMX. I would not want to go into details about those technical parts as most of my readers would not have understand what are they reading if I wrote too technical. LoLz.

Before we start with some explainations, let us get back to the main point of purchasing a Laptop first. What do you want as a normal user? This should be the main question that I would have as a friend if he or she wanted to buy a laptop. I guess most of us at our age nowadays wanted a laptop as some kind of entertainment, to watch movies, to listen to music, do some documents, surfing, chating and some light games. When I says light games I really do mean it. If you are looking for heavy 3D graphics for laptop, I would strongly suggest a desktop. Laptop was not build for heavy stuff at first (exceptional for those Alienwares). LoLz.

CPU - Central Processing Unit. This is the heart of the Laptop, commonly known as the "Processor". There are 2 majors competitor for the CPU which is Intel and AMD. There also VIA Cyrix which is less popular. Many People mistakenly think that Centrino is a processor by Intel. No it is not. Centrino is actually a standard set by Intel. The laptop that has this centrino logo actually consist of an Intel CPU (Speedstepping capable), and a Intel Chipset and an Intel Wifi. Which CPU to choose ? I would recommend Intel over AMD on laptops although AMD is cheaper. Well there are a few CPU's in the market now from intel for laptops, mainly the Core Duo, Dual Core , Core 2 Duo , Celeron. What are the differences ?

Core Duo - First Generation of the Core family, Does Not support 64 bit processing
Dual Core - Cut Down version of Core 2 Duo, Normally have half the cache of the Core 2 Duo. Support 64 bit.
Core 2 Duo - Current most popular CPU among many users.
Celeron - This one is tricky, there are many versions of Cut down CPU's being rename as Celeron, Intel has been using the name for Pentium II cut down version all the way to Core cut down version.

To me, Dual Core is more then enough for normal users. Many friends like to ask me , faster processor better right ? To me, the answer is NO! A comparison of a 2Ghz vs a 1.6Ghz processor of the same specification only show seconds of improvement. It is not like older days where by you wait for years if you CPU is slow. Cut down version normally has smaller Cache, but what does it means? cache is a very fast accessable RAM for the CPU itself. Smaller means slower of cause, but It is not that much noticable if you are not using heavy calculations program, 3D rendering, Heaving 3D gaming, SQL query might have affected too. But then if the Laptop are meant for movie, music, light gaming, do it really worth to spend extra on this ? think twice..

RAM - Example : Imagine the CPU is the person working on a desk. RAM would be the Desk. More RAMs means the Desk is bigger, more paper work can be store on the desk and the person who works on it can access the Desk faster instead of looking for the information in a drawer (Harddisk). But bear in mind, a 32 bit processor is only capable of accessing around 3.5 GB rams only. A 64 bit processor does not necessary be capable of addressing more then 3.5 GB it had to be pair with an OS (Operation System) with 64 bit capability. Microsoft has included an extension in some of their OS call the PAE (Physical Address Extension) which allow 64bit processor to address more then 3.5GB in a 32bit enviroment but it is limited to 2 GB per Application only.

A Normal user, 2 GB ram would be sufficient enough.

HARDDISK - This depends on what you want to store. But there are difference performance for harddisk drive on different specification. Older days, hard disk use have a rotation speed of 4200 rpm only while the newer one's would have 5400 rpm. And the latest one would do 7200 rpm. Faster means the system can access data faster. Bear in mind too, faster RPM drains power faster too. Normally Laptop nowadays supplied with 5400 rpm drives. That is another reason why Laptop are no match with desktop, a Desktop drive WD Raptop is running as fast as 15000 rpm.

GPU - Graphic Processing Unit, Graphic Card. A very much debateable topic. Many likes to says the laptop does not comes with a graphic card. Well I would like to rectify that, All Laptops has a graphic card, else you would not see anything on the screen itself. It is either On-Board @ Build-in , which means it is embedded into the chipset itself or it is external.

Well, this is my opinion. Those with Intel 945 chipsets comes with GMA950 which is still consider quite weak. 965 chipsets comes with GMA X3100 which is much better, and nowadays thos G33 chipsets comes handy with those HD4500 (if i remember correctly). Most additional external graphic cards are useless to me. namely the Nvidia 8400 or the ATI 6150. Those are just slightly better then the Intel ones which is not useful at all. Try running it on some heavy 3D games, you will end up having slide shows as well. If you wan better graphics looks for those mid range ones, such as the 8600 series (i dunno the newer series, but dont get those lowest range one, not worth). These mid range ones has stand alone rams which makes them a lot better.

Batteries - Laptop batteries are meant to be use. If you bought your laptop and worried charging and discharging it will shorten the lifespan of the laptop, then keep it :P . A laptop battery can last for 300 ~ 500 charges roughly. Sounds little right ? but the if you charge and discharge it like 2 or 3 days once, it would easily last for 3 years. But if you keep it for 2 months and discharge once. I bet it will dry up in less then a few charges later. And there is no more such stories as if you keep the AC on when the battery is on the laptop, it would over change.

Broga Hills (22-03-2009)

Since I went to Mt Kinabalu with my dear, we both seems to be looking for places to go for hiking because it is fun and healthy! My ex-colleague introduce me the Broga Hills which were located in Semenyih. So I made a plan to go there inviting few of my ex-colleagues. They were Bih Lin, Bih Lin's Husband, Kit, Carol, Erica, Chea, Py and Benny.

I woke up as early as 3.40am and get myself prepared for the hiking session. Went to fetch benny which is just nearby my neighbourhood at 4am. We reach the meetup point (McD Sungai Besi toll) at 4.40am. After they had a quick breakfast there, I brought them to my dear's house and where Bih Lin's husband parked their car there and we only go with 3 cars.

It took us around 40 minutes to reach our destination , Broga at about 5.45am. We were lost at first because we can't find the starting point as it was too dark. Anyway we manage to find it from another gangs of hikers.

Once we parked our car, we started to prepare before our hiking starts. Our loyal headlight which served us well during the last Mt kinabalu hike was ready as always. The road was dark as it is during dawn. This is the first time we came to Broga hills so neither of us know the path to the peak. We followed another gang of hikers whom we think might know the way as they sounds very confident. But then the were actually newbies too. Gosh they made us lost. We end up at a much more lower peak. There was no choice but to wait there as the sun is going to rise already. Anyway, my dear knows Im not satisfy with this peak as I didnt came for this. Everyone was upset with the Peak.

Instead of going all the way back which we took 1 hour to reach here. I opt for a short cut. We cut through long grasses and go straight up to the peak using our own path!
We are coming!
Finally, we made it. Some guys made a camp there and was amaze with us that we took our own path to reach the peak. LoLz .

The group of 9 person with Benny abandon at the lower peak as he doesnt want to climb anymore.
The girls.

The final Peak

Heading down using the actual path.
We reach the bottom at about 9am and went to look for food. Its a good experince and everyone seems to be happy with this hiking trip. I'll be orgarnizing more of these trips because its kind of fun. We've decided to go for another hiking trip this coming 12th April 2009. Chiling Falls. Stay tune!

Climbing Mt Kinabalu (Part 2) ... 15 Feb 2009

We woke up as early as 1.30am in the morning to prepare for our 2nd day trip, towards the Low's Peak! Rules has been tighten with in the climbing procedure it due to the mishap that happen during 2001, where by if we can't reach the peak by a certain time we are not allow to continue our journey and have to return as a safety precautions. In order for us to make sure that we are able to make it on time, so we wake up early!.

Last night was quite a worrying night for me as my dear was not feeling well. She can be very weak when she isnt feeling well. But i know she want to reach the top with me .. Badly. She was not really feeling well when she wake up as she didn't sleep well last night as well. Luckily after she had a hot drink, she felt recharged.
My dear with her thumbs up! Telling me, we gonna make it to the peak! TOGETHER!

The journey was a long and slow one. The peak is 2.7km from Laban Rata but most of the track were very steep. We started our journey at 2.45am. Today, my dear has better stamina then me, due to the air is getting thinner and thinner at these heights. I was dragging my dear because the air was to thin for me. Anyhow after 4 hours, we finally reach the peak by 6.30am. slightly miss the sunrise. Suppose to be at 6.15am .. around that. Anyhow we manage to capture it but not that nice.
This is the South Peak which we can see it on our Malaysian 1 Ringgit note.
My Dear and me with the sunrise behind us :D

All 4 of us are able to make it to the peak!
Wind says, Everyone wants to capture a picture of the signboard but we dont even know what is it about :P
Dear and me posting on the signboard. 4095.2 M above sea level !
I've made it!
St John's Peak behind my dear and me :D
My dear feeling tired..
There is still a long way to the bottom ... 8.7 km away ..
Sweet moments :D
The donkey's ears peak.
The way down ... the rope as a guide ..
Feeling tired but still showing me the Victory sign!
Nice view from the top.
Some danger spot.
So long Mt Kinabalu! We enjoyed the trip a lot :D

My third Climb ..

1st climb was on 2 April 2000, made it to the peak! 2nd Climb was on 25 April 2008, only manage to pass Sayap Sayap as it was raining so we have to retreat. 14 Feb 2009, this is my 3rd Climb with Yee Wan and 2 of her friends, Wind and Lye Ting. I choose the shorter path , the Timpohon trail, as it is the first climb for 3 of them. We started our climb on 14 feb 2009 at 8.30 am. Let the porter carry yours stuff, don't save the money, trust me! especially those who is not very fit. Don't carry your windbreaker yourself too, as you wont need it because as you climb you will feel that you are sweating and you body will create heat.
The first day trail is not that hard, you will just walk to path like the picture above.
There are sign to identify every 0.5 km you have pass through and the height of that area above sea level as well.
My favorite picture that i took with my brother's Canon EOS 450D

We made it to the first stop, Pondok Kandis at 8.51 am.
Yee Wan still looks strong after 2.5km walk. We were there at 10.06am.
Took us another hour to reach 3.5km at 11am, which is consider quite slow.
The path is getting harder as you see most of the route has become rocky. We made it to 4km (Layang Layang) at 11.30am and had our lunch break there. The packed lunch provided by Balsam Restoran were cold and tasted so so only. We had to make it quick as we have to move on. There is still 2km from Laban Rata.
This signboard was newly build as I didnt see it last year. Its put there in case some climbers don't know the route and went to the wrong end.
As we climb higher, trees are getting shorter and mist are crowding the areas.
This is the first area that we have to use the rope to assist us through.
The view from above.
You can actually fill up your bottle with mountain water every stop, if you dare to drink. But so far I never had problem drink it.
There are also restroom for you to do your business :P.
1.16pm, We made it to the 5th Km. Its 3001M above sea level, and its getting cold!
Trees are very short here as the height of the area was not suitable for growing huge trees.

The route is now purely rock as we almost reach Laban Rata.
1.57pm, Yee Wan is getting tired and our movement is slowing down, but we are almost there, another 0.5km only.
Yee Wan is slowing down very much as she is not feeling very well.
2.30pm, We finally made it to Laban Rata. 3290m above sea level. Its the place we going to stay for the night. We have to rest well to prepare for our climb tomorrow.
View from Laban Rata Resthouse. A bunch of local workers are having their games out in the cold.
A beautiful Sunset view.

:D
